On the road to accessible transportation

CANADA, February 18 - At Spinal Cord Injury PEI (SCI PEI), the walls tell a story.

Photos, news clippings, and personal testimonials show how their work has made a difference in people’s lives—reminders of resilience, advocacy, and the ongoing fight for accessibility and inclusion.

Now, thanks to funding from the Live Well PEI Wellness Grant, supported by the Chief Public Health Office, SCI PEI is taking another step forward with its Accessible Transportation Project. This initiative aims to gather feedback from people and make meaningful improvements to transportation access across the province.

With a strong foundation of community engagement, SCI PEI is eager to hear stories, collect data, and spark creative ideas that will help shape a more inclusive and reliable transportation system—not just for today, but for the future.

"What’s most exciting is that our membership and aligned organizations are passionate and are not letting this issue go away," says Peggy Doughan, SCI PEI staff member.

The wellness grant will help SCI collect feedback through surveys and outreach. They will ask people with disabilities, caregivers, service providers, and the public to share their experiences and ideas about accessible transportation. The goal is to gather real life stories to better understand the current situation and highlight the need for solutions that can improve quality of life.

Glen Flood, SCI PEI executive director, is thankful for the funding. His passion isn’t just about temporary fixes, it’s about solutions that last. “The issue doesn’t go away after an attempt. We’re committed to making sure we see this through and stick with it,” he says.

It’s also clear in talking with Peggy and Glen that this isn’t just about getting people from Point A to Point B – it’s about giving Islanders the freedom to work, socialize, and fully participate in their communities.

"This isn’t just about transportation, it’s about independence and flexibility," Peggy explains.

With a strong advocacy history, SCI PEI is committed to driving change. This grant will support their efforts to turn conversations into action and help build a transportation system that serves everyone.

The Live Well PEI Wellness Grant supports projects that promote chronic disease prevention and overall wellness. By funding initiatives like this one, it plays a key role in improving Islanders’ quality of life.
