It was not until the 1990s that the U.S. government began to acknowledge its role in the conflict and provided aid to the people of Laos. The communist invasion of Laos in 1975 marked a significant turning point in the country's history. Niphaphone’s father was one of the men that were captured and tortured at the hands of the communists. He made a daring escape that would change the trajectory of his life and his family.

Niphaphone was born homeless outside of a refugee camp in Thailand where life was tough and uncertain. Once Niphaphone and her family entered the refugee camp, their nightmare was far from over. They still lacked access to basic necessities and her parents were in constant fear that she would die of starvation. The unsanitary conditions of the refugee camp would have Niphaphone’s skin covered with lesions. However, even in these unfavorable circumstances, her father found strength in holding on to his dream of a better life for his children. In 1979, that dream came true when the family arrived in America with one bag of clothes "Forty Dollars and a Dream". This is what she named her recently published book sold on Amazon.
