Origin welcomes details in Clean Energy Future announcement
Commenting on todays Clean Energy Future announcement, Origin Energy Managing Director Grant King said, Origin has consistently supported the view that an emissions trading scheme is the most effective way to reduce carbon emissions. The governments announcement today of the details of its carbon pricing scheme strikes a reasonable balance between a carbon price high enough to bring about real progress in reducing carbon emissions and providing adequate safeguards for households who will pay the increases in costs necessary to bring about this change.
With a carbon price in place, all energy users will have an added incentive to reduce their energy use.
The particular arrangements the government has announced in respect of the electricity industry provide sufficient certainty for industry investment in power generation such that consumers can expect to enjoy a continued reliable supply of electricity, said Mr King.
Mr King noted that substantial funds are being proposed for the support of renewable energy over and above the carbon price.
Mr King said, The onus is now on the renewable energy sector to demonstrate that renewable energy can contribute to the reliable supply of electricity while reducing carbon emissions at the lowest possible cost. Development of baseload renewable energy should be a priority for investment in this sector.
A feature of the announcements made today include a number of review processes amongst other things to ensure that longer term targets for emissions reduction and assistance for industry affected by these new arrangements encourage the ongoing competitiveness of Australian industry. It should be a key aim of the review processes that the transition to a lower carbon future be at the lowest possible cost, does not threaten the competitiveness of the Australian economy and that the price of doing so be passed efficiently through to consumers.
We look forward to working with government on the next level of detail, including the effectiveness of these review arrangements that have been announced today, said Mr King.
