7 Questions With: Coca-Cola Co-Founders Ricardo Suarez and John Cooper

Ricardo Suarez (left) and John Cooper from Mexico City have been part of the Coca-Cola Founders Platform since 2013. Ricardo has been founding startups since he was 20 years old, and has been recognized as one of the most innovative entrepreneurs in Mexico. John has a passion for building startups and is considered an expert at creating the right environment for companies to grow.

Together, Ricardo and John are building Truu Mobile, a transformative mobile service provider designed for teens, by teens.

Ricardo: From a business perspective, Jeff Bezos. Jeff is a visionary leader who has proven to be a very innovative and successful entrepreneur.

John: Everybody who fights through challenges and reaches the top of their field. World-class Olympians, artists and professionals, total respect. Oh yeah, and fellow South African Elon Musk. He’s doing some interesting things.

What is your favorite food?

Ricardo: Mexican food. I love it... from enchiladas, chilaquiles, mole, to the traditional tacos.

John: Nothing tastes better than freshly cooked street food in Thailand, pure magic in a bowl! My taste buds are buzzing just thinking about it.

What is your favorite quote?

Ricardo: “Resistance is invisible, insidious, impersonal, infallible, universal, never sleeps, aims to kill.” - from Do the Work by Steven Pressfield

John: “Be yourself; everybody else is taken” - Oscar Wilde

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Ricardo: When you are experiencing a difficult moment, when everything looks dark, and your morale is at a low point, don’t take it personally. Look back and see all the success you have had and all the progress that you have had even in situations with a lot of obstacles and very low resources. This advice was given to me a few times by a successful entrepreneur and a friend of mine when I was having trouble with previous startups I founded.

John: I remember when I was about 10 years old and I wasn’t happy about something. My dad asked, "What are you going to do about it?" It’s such a powerful and provocative question that has been the starting point of so many amazing journeys, entrepreneurial and otherwise.

What is your passion or hobby outside of work?

Ricardo: I’m a soccer fan. I still play!

John: My day-to-day life is so frantic that I am drawn to relaxing hobbies. I love photography, especially live concerts and events. Picking out the relevant details, putting your own interpretation and meaning on them, all at the speed of light. It’s the ultimate mental gymnastics!

What is your favorite city you’ve ever visited?

Ricardo: Berkeley, California. A city full of great memories, friends and lots of fun.

John: I was totally blown away by St. Petersburg during the White Nights Festival. Either stay up all night relishing the festivities or get a hotel with thick curtains.

What is a little known fact about you?

Ricardo: I would like to be a movie director in the future.

John: I have set myself the weird goal of visiting more countries than my current age. I am ahead as I have been to 41 countries. I am younger than that, but only just barely... so it's time to dust off the backpack.
