National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Each October, the United States recognizes National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This national campaign seeks both to raise awareness about disability employment issues and to celebrate the contributions of America's workers with disabilities. The theme for the 2014 campaign is "Expect. Employ. Empower."
National Disability Employment Awareness Month grew out of a law enacted by Congress in 1945. That law declared the first week in October "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." Over time, the law changed both to recognize the employment needs and contributions of individuals with disabilities other than physical disabilities and to expand its reach and scope.
The United States Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy has created many resources designed to help employers learn more about supporting the employment of workers with disabilities. Among the resources are a list of simple and easy-to-implement ideas, such as conducting a training session on disability etiquette, reexamining workplace policies to ensure they comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, or issuing a press release regarding the company’s efforts to further the employment options of individuals with disabilities.
