When You’ve Made a Mistake at Work…

// Dallas, Texas, United States // Attorney Keith Clouse (Blog) // Keith Clouse

At some point, every person will make a mistake at work. How a person responds to a mistake, however, can dramatically impact the person’s career. Keith Clouse, a Dallas employment law attorney who regularly counsels executives on career issues, discusses how to respond to a workplace misstep.

1. Assess what went wrong. The executive should identify what steps or decisions should have been made and which factors led to the failure. While it may be tempting to do this alone, the executive may benefit most from the feedback of others. Their constructive criticism could provide invaluable insight. 2. Apologize. The executive should reach out to key people (clients, senior executives, shareholders) to acknowledge the error and to take responsibility for the problem. 3. Realign business and personal goals. An executive may need to scale back his initial plans or figure out alternative ways to move forward with a project. He might also need to reprioritize his career ambitions or consider a job change. Once he has new goals in place, he should begin taking steps to reach those new goals.

Above all, an executive should not allow himself to be defined by the failure. He should learn what he can from the situation and move forward with confidence.
