Physician Employment Mistake: Failing to Do the Homework

When a doctor joins a new medical group, he must do so with his eyes wide open. Unfortunately, a doctor can easily get caught up in promises and expectations and fail to adequately do his homework when investigating a potential employer.

A new doctor should fully vet a potential employer. Just as the employer interviews him, he should interview the medical group. A physician should ask many questions about the proposed job, including questions about job duties, call assignments, how compensation is determined, how new patients are assigned, mentorship opportunities, and related questions. The doctor should also ask questions about the medical practice itself. These questions should focus on the turnover rate, the profitability of the practice, where former associates are now practicing, malpractice issues, pending litigation, and other issues. If something concerns the doctor, he should keep questioning the physicians in the practice until he obtains a satisfactory answer.

Doing this background research will help the physician understand what he’s getting into. It will also help him negotiate a solid employment agreement that both satisfies the doctor’s concerns and that addresses the employer’s circumstances.
