Dallas Employment Lawyer on Letting Employees Take Vacations
// Dallas, Texas, United States // Attorney Keith Clouse (Blog) // Keith Clouse
Many Americans envision themselves spending the last two weeks of the year warming their toes before a fire at a ski lodge, cuddled on the couch with the kids, or making a cross-country trip back home. But, when these same Americans make vacation requests, many are told, “No.” Keith Clouse, a Dallas employment lawyer, encourages companies to let eligible employees take earned vacation leave.
Even though most employees have a benefit package that includes vacation time, many employees rarely get to take leave, either because their bosses routinely turn down vacation requests outright or because their bosses make the employees feel so guilty about taking vacation leave that the employees don’t even bother to ask.
Of course, an employer cannot accommodate every request. But, an employer who offers vacation time as a benefit must be prepared to allow employees to use it. The company should develop a plan for how key job responsibilities can be shared, and the company should cross-train personnel so that tasks can be completed by multiple staff members. Accommodating employee requests for vacation leave can reap huge benefits in terms of loyalty, low turn-over, and high employee morale.
