Parliamentary Secretary Pierre Lemieux Sits Down with Members of the Agriculture Sector in Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, August 24, 2012 - Today, Pierre Lemieux, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, concluded meetings with local farmers and food processors to hear their thoughts on federal agriculture policies and programs. The meetings took place over two days in Charlottetown and O'Leary. Regional Minister Gail Shea (Egmont) hosted the roundtable discussions where PS Lemieux reaffirmed the Harper Government's commitment to jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity. Specifically, he highlighted some of the ways that the Harper Government is delivering for the agriculture sector on the Island.

"Our Government understands that a strong agriculture sector goes hand-in-hand with a strong economy," said Parliamentary Secretary Lemieux. "That's why this Government continues to focus on helping agriculture producers and processors to be successful. Canada's agriculture sector is currently doing very well and we want to make sure that it is well positioned for both future challenges and for future opportunities."

Parliamentary Secretary Lemieux used the opportunity to highlight the Harper Government's commitment to both positioning the Canadian agriculture sector for future success, through strategic investments in science and innovation and opening export markets, as well as providing producers with a dynamic suite of Business Risk Management programs that are timely, bankable, and predictable.

"Sitting down regularly with farmers and processors is important, as it keeps our Government informed about agriculture issues on the Island and helps us better target our efforts and investments on the key priorities of the agriculture sector," said Minister Shea. "Our Government will continue to work closely with our farmers, producers, and processors to develop policies that will ensure that our agriculture sector is poised for future success and ready for any difficulties that may arise."
