The West China Press was launched on January 20, 1982, with Ms. Wu Jingwen as its president and publisher. Wu Jingwen was born in Guangzhou, grew up in Hong Kong, and graduated from Hong Kong Sacred Heart Girls' Middle School. He came to study in the United States at the age of 18 and received a bachelor's degree in international studies and a master's degree in journalism from Washington University in Washington State.
