The Ames Tribune traces its roots to 1868 and a publication called The Intelligencer. Over the decades, the newspaper underwent mergers and ownership changes, along with multiple name changes. The paper was first called The Tribune in 1911, and in 1919 became the Ames Daily Tribune when it merged with the competing Ames Times. The Ames Tribune has won many awards for its journalism, highlighted by the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing, won in 1997 by then-editor and co-owner Michael Gartner.
