WASHINGTON, D.C., June 1, 2012 — A Chinese trade delegation of high-ranking industry and government officials interested in investing and conducting business in the United States will meet June 4 at the Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel in New York for the American Bar Association program, “East-West Trade: Legal Requirements for Foreign Business and Investment.” The conference is sponsored by the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section in cooperation with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

Wang Li, deputy director general of CCPIT, will deliver the opening remarks at 3:10 p.m. Randy J. Aliment, chair of the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section, will co-lead a question-and-answer session and provide closing remarks at 5 p.m.

Session topics include:

Committee on Foreign Investment in United States — ABA President-Elect Nominee James R. Silkenat, a partner in the national law firm of Sullivan & Worcester, will discuss the guidelines for gaining approval and acceptance of foreign investments from CFIUS— the U.S. inter-agency committee that reviews the national security implications of foreign investments in U.S. companies or operations— and how to increase the odds for a successful review.
3:20 p.m.

United States Intellectual Property Overview — This session will address intellectual property protection in the United States; as well as the IP regulations and enforcement measures foreign investors should expect when bringing their operations to the United States.
3:45 p.m.

Compliance with United States Employment and Labor Laws — Panelists will discuss compliance and obligations with U.S. labor and employment laws, including employment practices, minimum compensation requirements, employee rights and potential litigation for violations.
4:15 p.m.

• How to Enter the United States Marketplace;
• Director’s and Officers’ Liability;
• An Introduction to Basic United States Bankruptcy Issues; and
• Risk Management and Team Building in Cross-Border Disputes.
