April 20, 2012 – New York – AJC commended the city of Vienna for its decision to rename a street honoring Dr. Karl Lueger, a prominent Austrian politician whose hateful rhetoric and attitude towards Jews inspired Adolph Hitler.

The Dr. Karl-Lueger-Ring will be renamed Universitätsring, or University Street.

Lueger, who served as mayor of Vienna from 1897 until his death in 1910, played an important part in strengthening and legitimizing Austrian anti-Semitism in the early 20^th century. He did not allow Jews to serve in his administration.

“Honoring a notorious anti-Semite with a street in Vienna decades after the Holocaust has long been a shame on the Austrian nation,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. “This week’s decision to correct this disgraceful anomaly is a welcome step for Austria in coming to terms with its history.”
