The Doncaster Mile is a 1600 metre Group One event for runners three years-old and up held under handicap conditions at the Royal Randwick racecourse this Saturday the 21st of April.
The 2012 Doncaster Mile, which jumps off at 3:35pm Sydney as Race7, offers $2million in prize money with a lucrative $1.2million first prize.
As such, it has a history of attracting the top middle distance gallopers from Australia and New Zealand, and this year's field promises to continue the tradition established by recent winners such as Triple Honour, Grand Armee, Sunline and Assertive Lad.
This year's crowded Doncaster Mile field, which contains the capacity twenty runners, includes nine Group One winners, the 2010 winner (Rangirandoo) and last year's favourite (More Joyous).
The Gai Waterhouse trained More Joyous, who entered as last year's dominant favourite, had trouble handling the rain soaked heavy track and finished a disappointing eleventh. Thus denying the master trainer a record tying seventh Golden Slipper trophy, which would equal the record established by her legendary late father, Hall Of Fame trainer T J Smith.
This year's track conditions, which were rated Heavy on Wednesday with more rain expected prior to race day, are receiving much attention from the odds-makers. More Joyous, who was installed as the early favourite, has recently been joined by the Grahame Begg trained Secret Admirer.
Secret Admirer and More Joyous are the current co-favourites, with Doncaster Mile win odds in the $7.50 range. The pair are followed by Shoot Out who's win odd are in the $8.50 range with Sincero rounding out the top four priced around $9.00.
