On Friday January 13, 2012 a young girl was struck and killed by a van in a Manhattan intersection, according to information received by New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter. The attorney explains the incident has prompted some local leaders to petition the city to make the street where she was killed safer.
Police reported on Friday that 12-year-old Dashane Santana was hit by a Toyota minivan at the intersection of Delancey Street and Clinton Street. Manhattan injury attorney Jonathan C Reiter explains that while 2011 proved to be the safest year for pedestrian safety in New York City, Manhattan has continually battled some problem areas.
According to reports, the young girl was taken to Downtown Beekman Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The girl’s god sister described the loss, “She was young, she had her whole life ahead of her. She was only 12, was going to be 13 February 7th.”
The driver remained at the scene of the accident, according to info received by New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter. As of Friday, no charges were to be filed.
In a statement made later that day, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said hundreds of accidents have happened on Delancey Street over the past decade.
Stringer is calling for a safety overhaul, according to Manhattan injury attorney Reiter, and wants increased crossing times, expanded medians and better signs.
New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter explains the New York DOT launched a strong anti-speeding campaign in efforts to improve safety for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, in August 2010. The plan’s action items were as follows:
• Install countdown pedestrian signals at 1,500 intersections
• Re-engineer 60 miles of streets for greater pedestrian safety, according to corridor crash data.
• Re-engineer 20 intersections for pedestrian safety on major two-way streets.
• Launch a pilot program to test the safety performance of neighborhood 20 m.p.h zone.
• Implement pilot program to improve visibility at left turns along avenues in Manhattan.
The full impact of the city’s efforts has not been determined as of yet, explains New York City injury lawyer Jonathan C Reiter.
