Central Florida CPA Firm Turns to Next Horizon for Hosted Exchange Services

The certified public accounting firm of Glickstein Laval Carris, P.A. in Maitland, Fla. has joined a growing number of businesses that have made the move to hosted Exchange services with help from Next Horizon Networking & Technology, a Central Florida computer services and web technology design company.

Exchange server hosting means that a specialist IT company runs the technology and charges businesses a small monthly fee to use it. This allows small and mid-size companies to enjoy the same enterprise-strength IT that larger, Fortune 500-type companies have, but at a price they can afford.

For the past several years, Glickstein Laval Carris (GLC) had managed its own domain e-mail transactions using an in-house Exchange 2003 server for 45 desktop computers, several laptops and multiple servers, all on a strict budget. Eventually, maintenance and security requirements became burdensome on the firm, which led Harvey Levitt at GLC to contact Next Horizon.

"We are accounting professionals and computer security is not one of our core competencies, which is why we decided to shift these responsibilities to Next Horizon," Levitt explained. "We compared the cost of continuing with our in-house email server - which would have required a significant upgrade when moving to Exchange 2007 - to moving to a hosted Exchange environment with Next Horizon and found the cost very reasonable."

Harry Ellis, III, IT Manager at Next Horizon, describes the benefits of hosted Exchange services to businesses.

"Hosted Exchange services can boosts company productivity through features like always-synced email, files, calendars and contacts," Ellis said. "It also provides for mobile access for smartphones and tablets, shared calendars that let employees see colleagues' availability to schedule meetings and plan projects, and shared contacts which guarantee that customers' contact details will never be lost or misplaced."

Levitt said that Ellis and his team have been available to assist GLC each step of the way during the transition to the hosted Exchange server and that GLC experienced negligible down time. "They provided instructions on the critical path taken to move our existing Exchange Data from our in-house server to their hosted server and provided detailed information regarding the resetting of the staff's Outlook profiles to query the new hosted server," said Levitt.

Ellis said that moving to a hosted Exchange server is an option that more companies should consider.

"Compared to trying to manage all these functions in-house, hosted Exchange services allow small to medium sized companies to focus on what they do, instead of worrying about IT functions," Ellis said.

For Levitt and GLC, the experience of working with Next Horizon was an unexpected pleasure. "So many sales staff of other computer vendors will guarantee you 'the world' if only you sign up on the spot," Levitt said. "Harry will never promise you anything that he cannot really deliver."

About Next Horizon's Cloud Desktop Services
With a cloud desktop the physical boundaries of PCs disappear while continuing to preserve a user's personalized look and settings. A "virtual" desktop cloud streamlines IT's workload by providing the ability to remotely manage and maintain machines. At the same time, the PC/mobile device user gets a desktop that is always on, available from everywhere and always the same look and feel. The benefits of the Cloud Desktop include: the ability to function on any web-connected device; software operates in the cloud so users do not have to purchase software for each workstation; the cloud enables you to raise/reduce seats as necessary; crashed hard-drives and the other downfalls of the traditional physical desktop become less disruptive with a cloud-based desktop.
