Claude Cadet, a licensed eye care practioner in broward county with a successful practice in the Hialeah, Florida area, recently announced that his office made a generous donation to the Hialeah nonprofit agency Invest In Our Children, Inc.

"I have always believed in the power of education to change lives," says Claude Cadet. "After all, without my education, I wouldn't be able to open my own office and see my patients. It's something I love to do, and my education made it possible. I wanted to do something to open doors for students who might not be able to afford an education."

Each year, Invest In Our Children, Inc., accepts donations from prominent businesses in the Hialeah area, and the organization uses those donations to purchase back-to-school supplies for needy students. This is an oft-overlooked area of need for these students. While their education costs might be covered by taxpayer dollars, they are expected to provide their own pens, paper, art supplies and much more, and for some of these students, buying these supplies is difficult, if not impossible.

"As someone who graduated school, I can testify to the fact that school supplies are rarely cheap, and they're hardly ever free," says Claude Cadet. "And yet, you're expected to have all of these items available and ready to go when the first day of school starts. Some of these students can't even afford to buy a decent pair of shoes, much less spend hundreds of dollars on supplies. It's just not realistic."

Invest In Our Children, Inc., attempts to fill that gap. In so doing, the organization strives to help students stay inspired, connected and enrolled in school.

"I've heard stories of students who dropped out of school, rather than admit that they couldn't afford to buy supplies. That just breaks my heart," says Claude Cadet. "Times are tough out there, and so many young people are just too proud to admit that they're struggling. I wanted to do something to help these students, whether or not they'll admit that they need my help. We all need to work together to support students. They really are our future, and we need to work together to support this valuable and important segment of our society. That's why I give to Invest In Our Children each year. It's just the right thing to do."
