Chartis Reveals Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals for 2025

CHICAGO, February 12, 2025 /BUSINESS WIRE/ --

Chartis, a leading healthcare advisory firm, today announced the 2025 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and the 2025 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals. Based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, this annual program celebrates outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals.

“The Top 100 award program elevates the very best performers and helps create a roadmap for those seeking to improve financial and operational performance while continuing to care for the communities they serve,” said Michael Topchik, Executive Director, The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “This is our 15th year recognizing the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals and 10th year honoring the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals, and we’re thrilled to be able to celebrate these milestones with this year’s winners.”

Among the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals are 15 facilities in Nebraska followed by 11 in Iowa and 11 in Minnesota. Since the award’s inception, 46 Iowa Critical Access Hospitals have earned Top 100 status, the most in the nation. In the Rural & Community Hospital category, Ohio and Utah each have seven facilities earning Top 100 awards this year. Four states – Colorado, Minnesota, South Dakota and Texas – each have six hospitals recognized with a Top 100 award for 2025.

A complete list of this year’s award winners in each category can be found at https://www.chartis.com/top-performing-rural-hospitals.

Introduced in 2011, the INDEX is the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. Leveraging a methodology that utilizes publicly available data, the INDEX is used nationwide by rural hospitals, health systems with rural affiliates, hospital associations, and state offices of rural health to measure and monitor performance across a variety of areas impacting hospital operations and finance.
