Community Champion: High school football player organizes ceremony to honor Maine veterans (WMTW)

A volunteer experience with Wreaths Across America, has inspired a Maine high school football player to organize an event to recognize and honor veterans in his community. Tyler Holland is a senior at Scarborough High School. He participated in Wreaths Across America last November, an organization with a goal of honoring those who serve in the military, remembering the fallen and teaching the next generation the value of freedom. Holland says, "In my community the veterans deserve a little more respect and to be thanked and honored, so I went up to the Boosters Club for Scarborough football and told them about my idea to plan a veterans appreciation night.”The ceremony took place right before the high school football game at Scarborough High School, Scarborough vs. Sanford. Holland says he has grandfathers and uncles who are military veterans. Holland says, “I wanted to be able to thank as many veterans as possible in the community with a ceremony." Scarborough High School Assistant Coach, Benny Watson, is a veteran who served 10 years in the US Coast Guard. Watson says, "Coach Malia the head coach has often been quoted saying you judge the success of our program by the adults we produce.. despite wins and losses. I think having a community kids on team that hold these values speaks volumes to what we’re creating for young adults.” There was also a fundraiser to raise money for the Maine Veterans Home located in Scarborough.
