Wind for Schools Project Installs Turbines in Arizona and Virginia
Date: 1/3/2012
In December, Wind for Schools project teams in Arizona and Virginia each installed a new turbine. The Arizona Wind for Schools team announced the installation of a Skystream turbine at the Orme School in Orme. On the installation day, Wind for Schools state facilitator Karin Wadsack and Northern Arizona University student employee Marilla Lamb taught science classes at the school. They worked with the middle school students to build wind turbines and taught the high school science classes about wind/wildlife interactions, utility-scale wind turbine environmental monitoring, and the cost-benefit economics of distributed wind installations like the one at the school.
Wind Powering America's Virginia Wind for Schools team announced the installation of a turbine at Henley Middle School in Albemarle. The turbine is part of a Renewable Energy Resource Center at the school that also features 182 roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels and six solar thermal collectors, which use the sun's energy to heat water. Jonathan Bartlett (Wind Powering America national director at the U.S. Department of Energy), Remy Pangle (state facilitator at the Virginia Center for Wind Energy at James Madison University), and Jonathan Miles (director of the Virginia Center for Wind Energy) attended the dedication ceremony. Funding for the project came from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded grant of $211,000 from the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy. The school district contributed an additional $35,000.
