Creative Economy in times of Climate Change, ADBI Special Session at the 2024 World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE)

Time of Event

10.30- 12.30 (local time); 14.30 - 16.30 (Tokyo time)

Summary

Since the first World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) in 2018, the importance of the creative economy as a driver for economic development and diversification, social inclusion and equity, intercultural dialogue, and international influence has received increasing recognition. The creative economy has featured in UN Resolutions, G20 Leaders’ Declarations, and the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework and Vision 2045.

Under the overarching theme of Inclusively Creative: A Shifted Reality, the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) 2024 will be held from 2-4 October 2024. The conference will involve a dynamic and engaging series of high-level keynote speeches, hands-on workshops, lively roundtable discussions, illuminating panel sessions, captivating performances, and cultural explorations. This will provide a platform for improving knowledge, enhancing regional collaboration, and unlocking the socioeconomic potential of the creative economy in Asia and the Pacific.

The WCCE will focus on the current opportunities and challenges facing the creative economy, the workforce dynamics within the sector, the interplay between the creative economy and urban development, the role of digitalization in driving the next phase in creative innovation, and how the creative economy can accelerate the sustainability transformation.

The ADBI Special Session: Creative Economy in Times of Climate Change at the WCCE will focus on the intersections between the creative economy and environmental sustainability. The ADBI, together with our partners from the Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (IMTC) of Indonesia, will seek to strengthen understanding of the role of the creative economy in fostering innovative responses to global climate challenges, showcase success stories and good practices across countries and sectors, and discuss monitoring and impact evaluation methods for tracking and improving its performance.

The session will serve as a direct continuation of the insightful "Creative Economy, our Common Future" seminar held in Jakarta on 17-19 July 2024.

Objectives
  • Strengthening understanding of the creative economy’s role in fostering innovative responses to global climate challenges: illuminating the intersections between the creative economy and efforts to address climate change, and discussing how to further mobilize the sector towards the green transition.
  • Highlighting and exchanging best practices across countries and sectors: discussing innovative strategies, policy approaches, private sector and civil society initiatives, and creative endeavors designed to promote environmental sustainability.
  • Monitoring performance and capturing impacts: given the diversity of stakeholders and transversal, diffuse nature of the creative economy, speakers will explore how to track progress, evaluate outcomes, and enable continuous improvement toward a more creative and climate-friendly future.

A diverse range of stakeholders involved in the creative economy sector, including government officials, international policymakers, industry leaders, creative entrepreneurs and artists, and expert academics and researchers.
