Emergency closures on Kalanianaole Highway and Pali Highway for slope stabilization
HONOLULU– The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) issues this notification to the public of upcoming emergency closures on Kalanianaole Highway and Pali Highway for slope stabilization.
After recent heavy rains, HDOT conducted slope inspections on Wednesday, May 15. Based on these inspections, crews will close the Kailua-bound Kalanianaole Highway between Kamehameha Highway and Kapaa Quarry Road, Wednesday, May 15 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for loose soil removal and slope stabilization to minimize the risk of uncontrolled landslides.
On Thursday, May 16, there will be a single right lane closure on Pali Highway just after the Honolulu-bound tunnels, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to repair a section of slope stabilization fabric that fell off during recent heavy rain events. This area is where a major landslide occurred in December 2023.
Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and proceed with caution through any work areas. For weekly road closure updates, please visit: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/oahu/
HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities.
