Strengthening the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Ireland

As an Advisory Body to the World Heritage Committee, ICCROM supports States Parties in implementing the World Heritage Convention and improving the management of their World Heritage sites through capacity building and advisory assistance.

In alignment with this responsibility granted by the Convention, we joined heritage institutions in Ireland to provide heritage professionals and local government institutions with tools and knowledge to amplify their implementation of the Convention.

We supported the delivery of this workshop in coordination with Ireland's National Monuments Service and in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW), ICOMOS Ireland and the University College Dublin's World Heritage programme.

The workshop is part of Ireland’s renewed ambition for World Heritage and highlights its commitment to strengthening the implementation of the Convention nationally through capacity building and multi-sectoral dialogue.

The national introductory workshop on World Heritage provided an overview of the World Heritage system and key World Heritage concepts and processes, focusing on:

  • Assessing heritage values and attributes and understanding Outstanding Universal Value

  • Understanding the factors affecting World Heritage sites and heritage places

  • Discussing governance arrangements at World Heritage sites

Ireland has two sites currently listed on the World Heritage list, and several others on the tentative list. The workshop gathered those affiliated with such sites, heritage specialists and professionals from national heritage agencies, and planners and representatives of local governments.
