Canada’s labour force for biomass-based fuels set to grow up to 153% by 2035

VANCOUER, CANADA, March 26, 2024 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Careers in Energy, a division of Energy Safety Canada, announced the release of its pivotal labour market report, “Canada’s Energy Workforce: National Labour Market Outlook to 2035” and its regional spin-off reports. They have also published an online data dashboard to view the detailed results.

The reports emphasize the evolving nature of Canada's energy system, underlining its diversification and integration to include emerging sectors such as renewable low-carbon (biomass-based) fuels, liquefied natural gas (LNG), low-carbon hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Made possible through funding from the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, these reports offer a forecast of the future labour needs of Canada’s energy sector.

The study includes nine distinct energy sectors and considers two scenarios: The Current Measures scenario, based on the most likely plans, policies, and programs and the Opportunity scenario, based on realistic, but more competitive policies, programs, and incentives being implemented.

Projections from the study suggest the addition of 41,640 to 46,500 direct jobs between 2022 and 2035, depending on the scenario. This growth is particularly notable in the area of low-carbon technologies, indicating a promising shift towards sustainable employment opportunities.

“The Current Measures Scenario projects growth in biomass-based fuels to support Canada’s transportation sector. Reducing emissions with biomass-based fuels is anticipated to be more feasible than electrification for heavy transport and aviation, as they can be converted into liquid transportation fuels that are equivalent to fossil-based fuels. The additional biomass-based fuels production forecast in the Opportunity Scenario will depend on the implementation of policies, programs and incentives to attract investment.” Careers in Energy: Western Canada’s Energy Workforce Report

“New clean fuel refining capacity is under construction or approaching final investment decisions; production in Canada is poised to double or triple in the next five years,” stated Ian Thomson, President of Advanced Biofuels Canada. Advanced Biofuels Canada worked closely with Careers in Energy to ensure the inputs used to model the biomass-based fuels sector provided an accurate representation of the sector and its potential for growth that stretches from coast to coast.

The report also highlights that the growth of the energy sector creates jobs with above-average compensation, long-term security, and opportunities for career advancement. By diversifying the sources and locations of energy production in Canada, the economic benefits are distributed more broadly and stand to impact Canadians in every province.
