NOAA predicts a near-normal 2023 Atlantic hurricane season
As the Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off today, NOAA forecasts a near normal hurricane season this year. Current predictions estimate a range of 12 to 17 total named storms. Of those, 5 to 9 could become hurricanes, including 1 to 4 major hurricanes.
With higher than average ocean temperatures and expected El Nino developing this summer, predictions have varied considerably for the 2023 season. During the summer months, NOAA will begin a series of upgrades to it’s supercomputer. These upgrades will significantly upgrade its hurricane modeling. Upgrades will allow longer forecast ranges and the ability to predict flooding and worst-case scenarios to help communities prepare ahead of storms.
