Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced seven West Virginia organizations will receive $7,410,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to expand and strengthen health services for West Virginians. These federal awards are seven of the Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) requests Senator Manchin secured on behalf of West Virginia through the Fiscal Year 2023 funding bill.

“I’m proud to have secured these seven vital investments to improve and expand health services for West Virginians,” said Senator Manchin. “The projects announced today will support constructing a variety of new medical facilities, including two Emergency Ambulance Authority Stations, a complex care clinic, a physical activity center, and a healthcare professional training center. The funding will also purchase a spectrometer to advance vision research through West Virginia University. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to enhance the health and well-being of West Virginians across the Mountain State.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee allows members of Congress to submit CDS requests, which provides an opportunity for state and local governments, non-profits, and other public entities to receive targeted funding for projects that bolster their communities and directly support West Virginians. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Manchin works to ensure taxpayer dollars are allocated to priorities that benefit all West Virginians, boost economic growth and support the needs of communities across the Mountain State while remaining fiscally responsible.

Individual awards listed below:

• $2,000,000 – West Virginia University Hospitals
• This investment will fund a complex care clinic to support constructing one level of WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.
• $1,250,000 – Community Care of West Virginia
• This funding will construct a four-story rural healthcare workforce training and development building. 
• $1,160,000 – West Virginia University
• This funding will purchase a spectrometer to support vision-related research.
• $1,000,000 – E.A. Hawse Health Center
• This funding will build the Hardy Count E.A. Hawse Activity Center, which will help prevent and treat chronic obesity and diabetes.
• $750,000 – Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority
• This funding will construct a new Emergency Ambulance Authority Station in Dunbar.
• $750,000 – Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority
• This funding will construct a new Emergency Ambulance Authority Station in South Charleston.
• $500,000 – West Liberty University
• This funding will create a Healthcare Professional Training Center, which will house a healthcare professional laboratory suite, cooperative learning spaces and faculty offices.
