U.S. Embassy Cairo Independence Day Celebration Draws a Large Turnout

U.S. Embassy Cairo

July 19, 2023

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo welcomed over a thousand of guests to its annual Independence Day Celebration this week. It was the largest public event by the U.S. Embassy since the end of COVID restrictions and was attended by ministers, members of parliament, educators, journalists, influencers, as well as foreign dignitaries and United Nations representatives. The occasion marked an opportunity to celebrate the long and historic U.S.-Egyptian partnership.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires John P. Desrocher spoke to attendees about that relationship, “We celebrate our national day, but also recognize the personal and professional friendships and partnerships we have forged to strengthen the enduring bond between the United States and Egypt.  Our two nations have stood side by side in times of peace and in times of challenge.  We have worked hand in hand to promote stability, prosperity, and progress in this region and beyond.   The Chargé also thanked the strong support of Egyptian partners and officials in attendance, including Minister of International Cooperation Rania El-Mashat, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali El-Moselhy, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Alaa El-Din Fouad, Minister of Public Business Sector Mahmoud Kamal Esmat, Minister of Immigration Suha El-Gendy, and the Governor of Beni Suef Mohamed Hani Ghoneim. The event was also attended by Egyptian star actress Youssra, prominent Egyptian business leaders, journalists, and social media influencers.

Guests enjoyed entertainment by the U.S. Air Forces Central Band, which played a selection of popular American music, preceded by live vocal renditions of the national anthems of both Egypt and the United States, respectively. To accommodate local holidays, U.S. embassies around the world will often host Independence Day celebrations weeks or months before or after the July 4 date. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo extends its gratitude to the many American corporate sponsors of the evening for their generous support and contributions.

The speech as delivered is available here.
