California Association of Professional Scientists hosts 32nd State Scientist Day, names Assembly Member Dr. Jasmeet Bains 2023 Honorary State Scientist

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, May 3, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ -- California’s state scientists today taught more than a thousand school children about everything from pollution to geology at the 32nd State Scientist Day (SSD) on the West Steps of the State Capitol.

As it has for over three decades, the California Association of Professional Scientists (CAPS) sponsored the event to promote science education and encourage kids to think about a career in the field. SSD returned to the Capitol after COVID-19 public health concerns forced it to go on hiatus.

“After three years away, it’s great to be back at the Capitol teaching the next generation of scientists,” said CAPS President Margarita Gordus. “CAPS has always enjoyed overwhelming public support for our work protecting public health, the environment, the economy, the food supply, and California’s natural resources. This is one way we can say ‘thank you’ and inspire the next generation to continue protecting the state through science.”

State scientists volunteered their time to design and set up hands-on learning stations, from the “California Rocks!” exhibit featuring tsunami and liquefaction demonstrations and the Make-A-Quake experience to a noon “Mad Science” show that made learning fun.

CAPS also publicly recognized Assembly Member Dr. Jasmeet Bains as this year’s Honorary State Scientist for authoring an Assembly Concurrent Resolution designating May 3 as State Scientist Day. Like the event at the Capitol, the resolution highlights the vital work state scientists perform to benefit all Californians.
