SAN FRANCISCO —The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today fined one of the largest metal food can makers in the United States $30,000 for the improper management of hazardous waste at its Riverbank, California facility.

Inspections at Silgan Containers Manufacturing Corp. in 2009 and 2010 uncovered violations of federal standards governing the handling and storing of hazardous waste. In this case, the materials were industrial solvents related to the manufacture of food cans. Among the violations were inadequate waste leak detection measures, mislabeled or unlabeled containers and a crack in the concrete floor of a hazardous waste storage facility.

Under the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act program, hazardous substances must be stored, handled and disposed of using measures that safeguard public health and the environment.
