Statement of Charles D. Connor, President and CEO of the American Lung Association:

Washington, D.C. (October 6, 2011)—

“In the face of the threat of a veto from the President, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 2681, which would rollback clean air protections that limit emissions from cement plants. Rolling back these policies ignores the severe health consequences for all Americans, demonstrating yet again, that some in Congress side with big polluters over public health.

“Attempts to rollback clean air protections are simply out of control and cannot, nor should not, in good conscience, be undertaken by our Congress. This bill in particular will delay clean up of toxics like mercury and arsenic that cement plants pump out.  Eliminating these protections would cost Americans dearly, both in healthcare dollars and in lives. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the air quality improvements from cleaning up toxic pollution from cement plants will prevent up to 2,500 premature deaths, 17,000 asthma attacks and 130,000 days when people miss work each year.

“This bill is the latest concrete example of how out of touch Congress is with the American people who overwhelmingly support clean air protections.  It is clear what the Senate must do; reject this reckless, life-threatening bill and stand up for the health of our children.”
