Leader Hoyer Announces Updates to House Democrats' Official Online Resume Bank

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced a number of updates to the House Democrats’ Official Online Resume Bank today, alongside the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), the Blue Dog Coalition, the New Democrat Coalition, the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), and the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. Members of the public can visit MajorityLeader.gov/Resumes and submit resumes that are viewable by all new and existing House and Senate Democratic offices. Members of the public can also view new job announcements at MajorityLeader.gov/Jobs and a "Frequently Asked Questions" page with tips on how to best utilize this resource. Congressional Democratic staff can view all resumes, build candidate lists, and leave recommendations here (link only available inside House and Senate firewalls).

“I am pleased to release another batch of updates for our online resume bank that has been driving diversity in our ranks for a decade. The updates, which we do every two years close to the election when the bank is most heavily used, are based on feedback from House Democratic offices that regularly use the Resume Bank to hire staff,” said Leader Hoyer.  “The Resume Bank is a valuable resource, especially for our incoming Freshman Members-Elect, and it is a major driver of diversity among Democratic staff. The Resume Bank exemplifies Democrats' commitment to openness, transparency, and equal opportunity within Congress.”

The new updates include:

  1. Giving the major Caucuses the ability to make recommendations on individual resumes that will be visible to all Democratic Congressional staff, something Member offices and individual Democratic staff have had the ability to do for many years. For example, the Congressional Black Caucus or the Progressive Caucus can now post recommendations on applicants that are authored by their Caucus.
  2. Giving individual applicants the ability edit their submissions. Previously, applicants had to fully resubmit in order to update prior submissions, but now all applicants can login to previous applications via email verification in order to make any small updates to an existing application.
  3. New functionality to "share" a candidate list with a 3rd party through the creation of time-limited unique access URL.
  4. Expanded diversity options for applicants to optionally disclose.
  5. Improved workflow and usability throughout.
This building upon the previous round of updates released last election which included:
  1. Expanding backend access to Senate Democratic staff.
  2. New functionality to create "candidate lists" with collaborators and share functions to manage the applicant pool throughout the hiring process.
  3. New job posting ability, including the ability to accept applications for a specific job opening through the Resume Bank intake form.
Members of the public who are interesting in working for Democrats on Capitol Hill are encouraged to enter the Resume Bank. When entering the bank, an applicant can also choose to share his/her submission with the House Diversity Initiative.

The Majority Leader’s Office is actively collecting resumes and screening candidates to help House Democratic offices fill current openings and in anticipation of the transition to the 118th Congress.

Current House Democratic offices can supplement their hiring process by searching for candidates in the backend of the Resume Bank via DemCom, which can only be accessed by House and Senate staff inside of the House/Senate firewalls. Here, you can filter by experience level, diversity fields, and other categories; create candidate lists and share notes internally among your hiring team; and create your own job postings that will appear on the popular Dome Watch app, in addition to MajorityLeader.gov/jobs where they are formatted to be easily reposted by outside job aggregators.

Current staff are encouraged to leave written recommendations on behalf of applicants that they support in DemCom; recommendations will be visible to other offices, and applicants with recommendations are sorted to the top of searches by default.

Incoming Freshmen Members and staff will be shown how to use the Resume Bank during orientation.

First launched in November 2012, House Democrats’ official Resume Bank has been a significant success with tens of thousands of resumes submitted, tens of thousands of visits by House Democratic staff to browse resumes, and over 800 personalized recommendations left on resumes from current offices and staff. The Resume Bank has been a driver of diversity, as evident by over 5,000 queries performed on demographics data field when current House staff browse resumes. The Resume Bank was updated previously based on feedback from users in December 2012October 2014November 2016November 2018, and November 2020.
