Florida Clinicians Wage a War in the Fight Against Prescription Drug Misuse
/EINPresswire.com/ Drs. Jeff Gudin and Rafael Miguel discuss current challenges of opioid overprescribing and the alarming number of deaths due to overdose in Florida
Pain management opinion leader Dr. Jeffrey A. Gudin recently interviewed Florida-based pain management practitioner and expert Dr. Rafael V. Miguel on the state of opioid prescribing and the climate of pain medicine in the state of Florida. Dr. Miguel discussed Florida's growing escalation in prescribing and dispensing of oxycodone, resulting in approximately 8 deaths per day due to prescription drug overdoses from the improper use and monitoring of this opioid. As a result of opioid overprescribing, as of September 1st of this year, dispensers are required to report their dispensing of controlled substances within 7 days of the dispensing date and, as of October 1st, the information will be available in a prescription drug monitoring program (PMP) database. Physicians will not be required to access the PMP; however, it is strongly recommended that they do so—especially for high-risk patients. In addition, pharmacists are required to access the system prior to dispensing any new medications.
Dr. Rafael Miguel received his medical degree at the Universidad de Cadiz Facultad de Medicina de Cadiz in Cadiz, Spain. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and served as chief resident. He currently holds a joint appointment as professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery and is the director of the Pain Medicine Program in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Jeffrey A. Gudin received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. Following a transitional internship in surgery, medicine, and anesthesiology at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, he completed a residency in anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine. He continued his training with an extended postdoctoral fellowship in pain medicine at the Yale Center for Pain Management, where he was actively involved in research and teaching. He is currently director of the Pain Management Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey, an affiliate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Gudin is board certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology, and is board eligible in addiction medicine.
