Disaster-Planning and Response Programs Mark 9/11 Anniversary

CHICAGO, Aug. 30, 2011 – Marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section is launching a year-long series of teleconferences, podcasts and live programs on disaster preparedness and response.

Beginning with a teleconference on Sept. 6, the series will address issues arising from disasters caused by terrorism as well as natural events, negligent acts and threats to cyber-security. It will cover topics including preparedness, risk management, recovery, liability, insurance, claims and litigation.

The 10 teleconferences from Sept. 6-19 will feature speakers including Kenneth Feinberg, special master of the U.S. government’s initial September 11 Victim Compensation Fund and administrator of the BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster Victim Compensation Fund.

Other speakers will include Sheila Birnbaum, newly appointed special master of the revitalized September 11 Compensation Fund for first responders and clean-up workers of the World Trade Center disaster site, and Senior U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein (S.D.N.Y), presiding judge over the WTC disaster site and related litigation.

The initiative of the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section, spearheaded by section chair Randy Aliment of Seattle, complements newly released materials from the ABA Special Committee on Disaster Response and Preparedness. Free publications to help lawyers develop disaster plans for their practices are available on the committee’s website at www.americanbar.org/disaster.

In addition, at its meeting in August, the ABA House of Delegates, which sets policy for the world’s largest lawyers’ organization, approved Resolution 116, which urges law firms and bar associations to adopt procedures for emergency management planning and response.
