AJC Applauds President Obama for Boosting Fuel Economy
July 29, 2011 – New York – AJC applauded today’s announcement by President Obama that fuel economy standards will be raised to 54.5 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks between 2017 and 2025.
“Raising fuel economy standards sends a clear signal that America is on the path toward ending its oil addiction and, in particular, the flow of petro-dollars to the coffers of hostile exporting regimes,” wrote AJC President Robert Elman and Executive Director David Harris in a letter to President Obama.
The full text of the AJC letter to President Obama follows:
We write on behalf of AJC, an organization devoted to promoting greater energy efficiency and independence since 1973, to applaud your achievement today in reaching a deal with major auto manufacturers to raise fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks between 2017 and 2025.
This improvement in fuel efficiency for passenger vehicles marks an important milestone. Raising fuel economy standards sends a clear signal that America is on the path toward ending its oil addiction and, in particular, the flow of petro-dollars to the coffers of hostile exporting regimes. Needless to say, it is imperative that there be no reduction from, or delay in implementation of, the 54.5 miles per gallon standard that you announced today.
We urge you and your Administration to continue this important effort by working to ensure that our nation’s vehicle fleets are held to the highest feasible standard, and by looking for opportunities to further raise fuel economy standards, as well by expanding the availability and variety of alternative fuel vehicles through open fuel standard, electrification and enhanced use of natural gas. In addition, we urge you to make it a matter of high priority to promote increased production of domestic oil and gas, including through off-shore drilling and from shale, accompanied by appropriate environmental safeguards.
Once again, AJC applauds this critically needed step and looks forward to working with your Administration in promoting implementation of this and other related measures.
Respectfully,
Robert Elman, President
David Harris, Executive Director
