Three Enforcement Orders Served in April

Thursday, 5 May 2011

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that two Closure Orders and one Prohibition Order were served on food businesses during the month of April for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998.  The Enforcement Orders served in April were issued by EHOs in the HSE West Region.

Closure Orders were served on:

• Currans restaurant (areas closed: rear storage area and patron sanitary accommodation), Church Street, Ennistymon, Clare
• The Golden China restaurant, The Square, Lisdoonvarna, Clare

A Prohibition Order was served on:

• World Beers, Unit 1, Quitman O’Neill St, Brendan Road, Portumna, Galway

Commenting Prof Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI, stated that similar non-compliance issues and breaches of food safety legislation keep recurring in food businesses. These include poor cleaning and sanitising, as well as improper storage of foodstuffs.

“It is disappointing that avoidable food safety infringements that could pose a risk to consumer health continue to occur.  With proper maintenance of a food safety management system, a significant number of food businesses would not find themselves facing enforcement action.  Dealing with these non-compliant food businesses requires a disproportionate amount of inspection services.  It is a food business operator’s legal responsibility to take the necessary steps to ensure that the food they serve and sell to their customers is safe to eat.  There is no excuse for shoddy practices.  If any food business operator is unsure of what is required of them by law, they can contact our advice line (1890 336677) or visit our website,” Prof Reilly states.

Details of the food businesses served with these Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website.  Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.

See the ‘Enforcement Orders Database’ on our website.
