Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
November 16, 2010

In recognition of the success of the Fulbright Program in strengthening United States-Pakistan bilateral relations and in honor of the accomplishments of the many Fulbright alumni from both countries over 60 years, the Embassy of Pakistan hosted a commemorative event on November 10, 2010. Ambassador Husain Haqqani and Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock delivered remarks.

As part of the growing United States-Pakistan relationship, the United States has dramatically increased academic and professional exchange programs with Pakistan. This year nearly 450 Pakistani students, teachers and other professionals will participate in the Fulbright Program in the United States. American scholars are also teaching and conducting research at universities in Pakistan under the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. The Governments of the United States and Pakistan together contributed over $20 million to the Fulbright Program in Pakistan in 2010. Since 1950, more than 3,000 Pakistani and U.S. Fulbrighters have participated in the program.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. Government’s flagship international exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants from over 155 countries with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
