Travis County, TX-- A driver ran a stop sign and slammed into the side of an SUV, killing a mother and two of her children on Monday, September 13, 2010. The fatal collision occurred the intersection of SH 130’s off-ramp and FM 696, as reported by KVUE.
Kevin Sparkman, 44, was reportedly exiting from SH 130, when he blew through a stop sign, clipped a red Mazda that was driving on 969, subsequently T-boned a black SUV, which was also traveling on 696, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported.
The driver of the SUV, Margarita Morfin, and her two children were tragically killed in the crash. A third child was flown by StarFlight helicopter to Dell Children’s Hospital for treatment. One of the victims was ejected from the SUV, but officials did not say which victim was thrown. None of the occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Sparkman was rushed by responding emergency crews to University Medical Center-Brackenridge for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Officials stated that SH130 is only a few years old, leading investigators to believe that Sparkman was unfamiliar with the road, causing him to run the stop sign. If investigators don’t uncover any more evidence, Sparkman will only be charged for running the stop sign. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the fatal wreck.
A full investigation is underway.
