New York, NY-- A double-deck Megabus slammed into a railroad overpass, causing it to overturn, killing four people and hospitalizing 15 others on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The single-bus crash occurred around 2:30 a.m., on the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Salina, a Syracuse suburb, as reported by CNN.
Officials are unsure why the bus attempted to pass under the low hanging overpass, but the owner of the bus stated, “Obviously the driver didn't see the signs or didn't realize the height of his bus, that the double-decker bus wouldn't fit under that bridge.” The bus driver was also off his designated route at the time of the crash.
Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh suspect that the driver missed a turn when the road split and a flashing yellow light, which alerts drivers of a low bridge.
Responding emergency crews rushed 25 people to area hospitals for treatment. One person was said to be critically injured. Five people were still hospitalized by Saturday evening. Four people were tragically killed in the crash.
The deceased victims were from India, Malaysia, New York and a Midwestern state, reported officials.
A Megabus spokesperson stated, "Our immediate thoughts and concern are with those who have lost their lives or been injured, as well as their families and loved ones… Safety is our absolute priority and we will be carrying out a full investigation into the accident as well as assisting the police and other authorities in any way that we can."
The Megabus was on its way to Toronto, Canada, from Pennsylvania when the fatal crash occurred.
