New memoir explores how one boy survives abuse, divorce, religious prejudice and poverty
MARIETTA, Ga. (MMD Newswire) August 30, 2010 -- Mom, Dad, Lawrence and Me: A Memoir by Donald Haugen takes the reader along on his journey from his upbringing by his dysfunctional family through the Depression, World War II, the 1950s, '60s and beyond to his eventual transformation into a happy, healthy adult.
Memoirist Haugen uncovers a desperate childhood in his new memoir, Mom, Dad, Lawrence and Me. Haugen says, "Overworked, often hungry, starving for affection, grossly neglected and emotionally abused as a child, I had no strong sense of identity." Battling prejudice and poverty, he relates how his strength of spirit and relentless hope enables him to persevere, survive, and later, to even thrive.
Haugen has said that he wants readers to understand the hidden dark side in many families. Ultimately an optimistic story with a happy ending, Mom, Dad, Lawrence and Me aims to show that it is always possible to have a better life.
