Blizzard Discovers Reality Bad for Business

Company kills plans to stop anonymous posting in WoW forums

July 12, 2010 -- World of Warcraft is full of all kinds of trolls and scurvy creatures lurking in the shadows -- and that's just on the game's message boards. That kingdom of spam will remain an autonomous one as the WoW community has shouted down Blizzard Entertainment's attempt to move toward accountability in posting.

Last week, Blizzard announced it would make changes to the community to curb bad behavior, led by requiring posters to use their real names, but gamers complained that associating their names with their actions would make them vulnerable to stalkers and in the workplace landscape.

Is the striking down of Blizzard's push for accountability a win for Internet privacy or another sign that the inmates run the online asylum?
