Deadly mesothelioma takes the life of beloved antiques dealer

An English antiques dealer is dead; his life cut tragically short by mesothelioma. This rare cancer, caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure, often kills patients within months of being diagnosed. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years following diagnosis.

Michael Hallam of Hartshorne, England, died at his home on February 27 of this year. It is thought that he developed mesothelioma on the job. Before working as an antiques dealer, Hallam worked for 16 years at a colliery, where he worked with boilers.

According to Hallam, “The boiler duties were dusty and dirty and we never wore masks. When we raked out the boilers the asbestos broke up. Electric cables and hard materials were also lagged with asbestos.”

Dr. Ivan Robinson examined Mr. Hallam’s body. “We found a tumor through the right side of his lung and small deposits of a mesothelioma tumor on the left side, in the heart and liver, but predominately in the right lung. In the left cavity we also found characteristics of plural plaques which is again a sign of mesothelioma. It is the exposure of asbestos which led to mesothelioma and it’s ultimately the cause of death,” he said.

Mr. Hallam’s son, Andrew, told reporters, “Towards the end, my dad could hardly breathe or move. He was previously a very fit man and didn’t suffer from any illnesses until he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and that’s when he really went downhill.”
