Tile Designer Spins Clay into Gold for Club Vanity at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas
Los Angeles - What happens in Vegas sometimes begins in Los Angeles…
When Charles Doell, Chief Designer at the Mr. Important Design firm sought to create a 'gold, crystalline' vibe for his newest project on the strip, he immediately thought of Daniel Ogassian, the creative force behind the prolific Ogassian studio.
The Challenge
The entrance of 'Vanity' - the private club inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas.
The Plan
A golden serpentine entry-way to dramatically entice nightclub patrons to the extravagance within.
The Players
Charles, with a broad design knowledge and a stellar history of Las Vegas design work paired perfectly with Daniel, a gem of product development and manufacturing prowess. The two teamed together to create a gold-glazed tile design with an asymmetric facet.
The Execution
Once installed, the ceramic tile surface came to life in a light show of colors and shadows, reflections and shapes, rich patterns and textural depth. Each faceted tile, rotated to a different angle casts random light creating the illusion of movement, building on the sinewy stretch from the dance-floor to the door. Is it inviting? Oh yes. Is it Las Vegas? You bet. And just as appropriately, Vanity is a private club.
The Company
Since 1995, Daniel Ogassian & Associates, Inc. has generated a continuous stream of products for the residential, commercial, and hospitality design industries. And yes, the abundance of product concepts continues with the newest addition to the Ogassian line; large scale surface tiles for use in lobbies, entries, proportionate rooms and public spaces. Upon completion of distributor agreements, these tiles will be rolled out into showrooms nationwide this summer. The tiles are available as concrete and ceramic tile and are a study in juxtapositions: Accelerated real-time manufacturing, combined with the Ogassian trademark hand-hewn style. Master craftsmanship blended with material science. The warm and organic textures delicately balance with clean, not modern - futurist shapes. The high-chemistry glazes are rendered in earthy shades adding a depth and texture to wall surfaces and floors.
The entire line of Ogassian products are appropriate for indoor or outdoor use and can be specified in any of the matte or gloss glazes, as well as custom glazes formulated and designed by Daniel. Each glaze is meticulously formulated for the way they flow over horizontal, sloping and vertical facets of the tiles. Daniel gets his tactile effect through his extensive experimentation of glazes and finishes in more than 20 years of experimentation with ceramics.
The Background
Daniel Ogassian is a Los Angeles-based Artisan turned Industrial Designer. His work, which he began developing after obtaining his MFA, and refining his prototyping at Art Center College of Design, spans free-standing furniture, ceramic and concrete tiles, outsized surfaces, and outdoor 'vessels' for plants and water features.
Daniel begins with a hierarchy, which works backward from the concepts of many of his contemporaries. Daniel has long held minimalism not as a movement but 'simple decoration with spare use of line and material choices…cleanly ornate design'. 'But what of the immenseness of ornamentation in the totality of design?' he asks. Daniel maintains he disregards function and actually starts with decoration, not the form. 'Ornamentation…preciousness is at the very nucleus of design. It is the DNA of the form, it is the origin, so that is where I start'. The DNA suggests the structure, the geometric complexity the resolution of feature and form.
And to Daniel, the DNA is where he finds the life, the activity, the movement. 'Imbuing a wall surface with surface tension reveals the interaction of static components. The structural tranquility and resolution which is accomplished by the sheer mass of visual stimulation would be overwhelming…if it weren't so subtle.' Wha? 'An optic-kinetic illusion is created by shaping the movement of shadows and light with 3D linear patterns'. Come again? "Walking past this wall, light and shadow create the illusion of movement."
