Trees to Give Way to Solar Panels at Library
Trees to Give Way to Solar Panels at Library
February 25, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Franklin Avenue Library in Des Moines, Iowa, is undergoing an $8.4 million renovation, including installation of solar panels on its roof. However, some pesky trees are standing in the way of the solar panels and the sun.
Eleven trees, including seven standing on cemetery property, will be cut down so that the panels will be able to collect sunlight. The state of Iowa gave the library $2.2 million as part of its efforts to promote green, energy-saving projects, and a library official said the panels will reduce utility costs up to 70%.
Is cutting down trees for the sake of solar energy a good trade off? Maybe it is when trees don't have a $2.2 million price tag attached to them.
