FirstAlert[tm] 5/7: Stress Relief

fa_logo_sq_225px-w_bwMay 7, 2009 (FinancialWire) (By Philip Holmes) — Stocks ended the trading day higher on Wednesday. Investors saw little green shoots on the jobs front and looked forward to hearing some good news on the banks from Dr. Bernanke. Could B of A (NYSE: BAC) really only need another $34 billion?

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 8,512.28, up by 101.63 points, while the S&P 500 index gained 15.73 points to end the trading session at 919.53. The Nasdaq composite index also finished higher, by 4.98 points, at 1,759.10.

April’s ADP Employment index indicated that private sector job losses may be slowing in the U.S. Private payrolls lost 491,000 during the month, better than March’s 708,000 decline. The U.S. government will weigh in with its own jobs numbers on Friday.

It may not matter: investors will still be reacting to the results of Ben Bernanke’s stress tests of 19 major banks. Those results will be posted today. Analysts, citing Bloomberg News reports, are expecting to hear that Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and GMAC are at elevated risk, and in need of capital infusion.

Bank of America is at the head of the treatment line. The bank is said to need $34 billion, while Wells Fargo will need $15 billion and GMAC will need $11.5 billion. Citigroup looks downright spry; it will need only $5 billion to float its toxic asset boat into the near future.

Bloomberg offers happier news on Goldman Sachs Group, American Express and Bank of New York Mellon. They’re part of the group that isn’t in need of assistance.

According to BusinessWeek’s reporting, Ben Bernanke says he is “satisfied” with the stress test data. The Federal Reserve chairman also sees signs that the housing market is bottoming.
