The Stolpersteine Central Amsterdam Monument Project To Honor Victims of the Holocaust: Seeking Surviors, Descendents
...even in times of joy and celebration we are urged to momentarily acknowledge tragedy. These stones provide that small tear of sorrow next to the grand history and architecture of the canals.””
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, February 17, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Stolpersteine Central Amsterdam Monument Project, is seeking survivors and descendants to help honoring and remember victims of the Holocaust.— Michael Potter
During World War II, the Nazis killed nearly 80 percent of the Netherlands’ Jews - a staggering proportion that represents the largest percentage of Jewish victims in any of the Western European countries.
Working together with key partners, “Stolpersteine” honoring Holocaust victims will be placed in front of the homes along the central canals in Amsterdam, where the victims had their last freely chosen address. This project will coincide with the opening of the Dutch National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam in 2023.
The first canal to receive a large number of Stolpersteine will be Herengracht, where on March 21st and 22nd 2022, 61 stones will be laid officially to memorialize those victims taken from their homes.
Michael Potter, the project’s initiator, explained, “the central canal area of Amsterdam is recognized as one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the world. Part of the Jewish tradition is that even in times of joy and celebration we are urged to momentarily acknowledge tragedy in both the past and the present. These stones provide that small tear of sorrow next to the grand and historic architecture of the canals.”
The project is currently seeking sponsors and supporters of the other Central Amsterdam canals:
Singel; at least 35 Stolpersteine
Herengracht; at least 62 Stolpersteine
Keizersgracht; at least 163 Stolpersteine
Prinsengracht; at least 142 Stolpersteine
Nieuwe Herengracht; at least 400 Stolpersteine
Nieuwe Keizersgracht; at least 392 Stolpersteine
Nieuwe Prinsengracht; at least 817 Stolpersteine
Total Stolpersteine to Honor Victims of the Holocaust: 2,011*
(*This number could be substantially higher because the Stolpersteine project can honor all victims of the Nazis, not only those victims that were murdered.)
An integrated STOLPERSTEINE app could enable a person walking down the street to learn the Jewish history as well as the history of other victims of the Nazis behind a house, a building, or a monument. The app is currently in development and seeking funding to provide augmented reality, photos, short video stories and other relevant content.
