Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed

CANADA, September 12 - Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, about the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia.

The two leaders exchanged views on developments since they last spoke on November 22, 2021, and the importance of working toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict, including through an immediate cessation of hostilities and inclusive dialogue among all parties. Prime Minister Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s strong and ongoing commitment to supporting African-led negotiations. The Prime Minister also reiterated the importance of ensuring humanitarian access and assistance for those affected by the conflict, as well as concerns about human rights, including reports of ethnic Tigrayans and other minorities being targeted. 

The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch.

The Prime Minister has also recently discussed the situation in Ethiopia with the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the High Representative of the African Union Commission for the Horn of Africa and former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.
