New Law Makes Mixed-Waste Manufacturing and Resource Recovery Financially Possible in West Virginia
“It’s a great time for these resource recovery and mixed waste processing facilities to expand across West Virginia,” said Mitch Carmichael, Secretary of the Department of Economic Development. “More facilities will lead to less trash in our landfills, more jobs for our citizens, and increased recycling rates in our communities.”
Advanced resource recovery manufacturer Entsorga West Virginia, located in Martinsburg, is home to the nation’s first HEBioT™ facility and is redefining the management of waste across the state. The facility collects municipal solid waste (MSW) and consumer and industrial non-hazardous wastes, removes the metals and recycles material that consumers have not separated, and converts remaining material to a cleaner alternative fuel that can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“At our facility, municipal solid waste and various types of commercial and industrial wastes that would otherwise be landfilled are put to use as a sustainable fuel,” said Anthony Fuller, CEO of BioHiTech, the majority owner of Entsorga West Virginia. “We are grateful to do business in West Virginia and look forward to furthering zero waste initiatives across the state.”
In 2020 alone, Entsorga achieved 78% landfill diversion while producing 11,062 tons of fuel—all in Martinsburg and utilized locally by other manufacturers in the area.
“It is our hope that companies like Entsorga West Virginia will continue to invest in our state,” said Sec. Carmichael. “West Virginia is proving that we want to be at the forefront of technology and working with companies to create a cleaner future.”
