MEMPHIS – Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have arrested and charged a 17-year-old accused of committing criminal actions that led to an officer-involved shooting in Memphis on Tuesday afternoon.

TBI Agents began investigating the law enforcement shooting at a gas station in the 2400 block of Elvis Presley Boulevard at the request of 30^th District Attorney General Amy Weirich. Officers from the United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force were trying to arrest a fugitive murder suspect after finding a vehicle matching the description of one believed to be connected to him.

When the officers tried to surround the vehicle with theirs, the driver – later identified as a 17-year-old who was not the fugitive – reportedly tried to flee by backing up and ramming nearby vehicles several times, including those belonging to officers and at least one civilian. A US marshal then fired his service weapon at the vehicle, striking the teen in the arm, after which he ran from the vehicle, across the street, where officers arrested him. While processing the scene of the shooting on Tuesday evening, TBI Agents located a loaded handgun in the vehicle, and learned the vehicle had been reported as stolen in Germantown on Monday. Agents further developed information identifying the teen as an individual responsible for the vehicle theft.

After the teen’s release from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, Agents arrested him, charging him with six counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, one count of Theft, and one count of Vandalism. The teen was being housed in juvenile detention in Shelby County at the time of this release.
