DEQ and DPHHS to Hold Remote Public Meeting on Harmful Algal Blooms in Nevada Creek Watershed

HELENA—Residents and visitors of the Nevada Creek watershed will have an opportunity to learn about harmful algal blooms (HABs) and hear about ongoing prevention work at an upcoming public meeting. The Department of Environmental Quality and Department of Public Health and Human Services, along with key partners, are hosting a remote public meeting with both phone and online capabilities on April 16.

HABs are caused by blue-green algae that occur naturally in Montana’s freshwater ecosystems. Under certain conditions, blue-green algae can proliferate into large blooms and potentially produce toxins that can pose health risks to people, pets and livestock.

The remote public meeting is a collaborative effort and will be facilitated by: local landowners, the Blackfoot Challenge, the Big Blackfoot Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Montana State HAB Program partners, including DEQ and DPHHS.

Topics at the remote public meeting will include:

  • An overview of HABs
  • Potential prevention and mitigation approaches
  • Ongoing HAB prevention activities in the watershed
  • The Montana HAB Program, including citizen reporting and monitoring resources
