Ruling party leader wants internal planning of 2020 local elections

Luanda, ANGOLA, December 2 - The president of the ruling MPLA, João Lourenço, last Friday in Luanda instructed the members of his party to prepare themselves for the first local elections, scheduled for the year 2020, by planning the activities to avoid improvisation and work under the pressure of time. ,

João Lourenço was speaking at the opening of the sixth ordinary session of the party’s Central Committee, having made it clear that the process of selecting candidates to the post of Mayor must obey objective criteria, such as competence and some acceptance in the municipality they may wish to contest.

To the ruling party leader, it is fundamental that the MPLA members exchange experiences with representatives of countries where local elections have been taking place for a long time.

He also reminded that the Local Elections Draft Legislation Package was recently submitted to the National Assembly (Parliament) which might soon approve it.

In his speech, he reiterated his government’s commitment to fighting corruption and impunity, as well as promoting equal opportunities, improving business environment and stimulating foreign investment.

The sixth ordinary session of the MPLA’s 363-member Central Committee closed on Saturday.
